As part of my unit, I was asked to developed Application Design Concepts as well as User Research report to showcase the journey of building an application from scratch. My chosen brief consists of an application for sustainability victoria.

Sustainability Victoria Logo

“Australia’s high rate of urbanisation means that most people experience a significant disconnect between their food production and consumption. Over the decades, suburban gardens have declined and Australians reportedly have a lacking understanding and appreciation of how their food is grown. But luckily statistics indicate this trend is changing, with just over half (52%) of all Australian households now growing some of their own food and a further 13% are intended to start.”

By this implementation, I have decided to do further research on the topic and the existing applications in order to gain more insights about the brief as a whole. At first, one of the principle points is working with the execution of normally achievable estimates by and large spaces of the Victorian economy, including neighborhood government, business and families and so forth. All of this is happening because of the comprises of Australia’s high speed of urbanization infers that by far most of residents encountering a tremendous disengage between their food creation, consumption and productions and also with the methods of utilization of the food. This is creating a real disconnection with a consumption negative impact behind.

Before attacking further process, I have been doing some research concerning the existing applications. To my surprise, no applications have yet been created with this type of goal. Sustainability Victoria application will consist of different elements such as:

  • growing food at home (based on location, time-frame, weather conditions and soil type)
  • helping and guiding the user to grow food in a low space area
  • develop recipes with foods grown at home
  • acts as an outdoor activity

Eventually, I have developed several questions at first to get a better idea of my target audience.

My target audience is very wide nevertheless I have broken it down into 3 user groups to facilitate research. My target audience age ranges from 18 years old to 70 years old with genders as male and female compromising of an annual income up to $115,000.

Example of user group used for this assessment
context variation

For the first variation, I have stick to the colour scheme, UI elements as per the brief. I have tried to implement as many design languages and principles as possible to guide and enlighten the user on his journey. The welcoming screen is a pop one up where the log in screen has been designed with low icons but highlighting has been implemented. Why the design principle highlighting? Highlighting can be viewed in terms of color, text decoration (bold, italics, underline). In the next two screens, alignment has been executed to provide a sense of belonging. It provides accuracy as well.

For the second variation, I personally believe that this is the area where i have executed more work in terms of developing the mockups. Photon design language has been used especially when it comes to the color palette. The execution of icons and colors brings an importance to the design and facilitate the user and help the user to feel more at ease while testing the application.

The third variation is equally important when it comes to designing for such a wide target audience. Colors implemented have been looked upon on adobe color wheel and the main aim is to target for the process of easy readability. At this point, I believe that a sans serif typeface is equally important as it gives the user a sense of trust and helps to ease the user’s journey. On the fourth mockup, only three icons have been implemented and upsized so that users with low vision do not find the screen too bulky.
